I've just put the 'phone down to a panic-stricken hypnotist who asked for some advice regarding abreactions. It would appear that his client had started recovering painful experiences during the trance and was still abreacting ... I suggested two things:
- Come on one of my courses and I'll teach him to do hypnosis properly
,and,
- Say "let the scene fade and bring the positive learning back out with you while you allow those old emotions to drift away. Now, add the resources you need - the things to let that other you, the you then, to know, like you did before then, and after then, that you have all you need to be able to return with a new positive understanding now and then. As the scene fades, add in more positives until you feel it change and become more aware of the learning you can take from that experience, knowing that you never need to encounter it in that old negative way again."
From my perspective, I've never had to deal with negative abreactions as I always suggest safety and comfort. I did start wondering whether anyone else had any suggestions for stopping an abreaction ... comments welcome.
