Topic: Derren Brown - The Gathering
Posted: Wednesday, May 25, 2005 3:00:26 PM

Derren has a one-off show coming up this Sunday 29th May, called 'The Gathering'. Just in case anybody had missed the trailers for it. No idea what he's up to, but it feels like it might be good. His Trick of the Mind series has been a bit weak as it goes on. Some neat stuff, but compared to his earlier series, a bit weak. The numbers games are okay, I mean I don't how he does it, but he's done a lot of numbers games, and it gets a bit repetitive.

The Richard Madeley / Alistair McGowan thing was good though - showing peoples patterns, and how someone like an impressionist could model them.

Still, hope The Gathering is good.

cheers all,

John

What other site are you talking about Simon? Can you let me have the address if it's something interesting.

Oh, and the handshake induction / pattern interrupt was very slick, very slick indeed.

I must have missed the wallet thing, or was that when he was guessing the amount of cash people were carrying. That was good, if that's the trick you meant. No idea how he did it, but brilliant nonetheless!

It was a nice start to the series. I got the bike, and that it was a BMX, particularly towards the end of the sequence when he said 'a BM or an X box', it was brilliant. I was explaining to my other half what he was doing to influence, and I think he was a bit baffled when I started talking about syntactic ambiguity and all that. Mmm... keep it simple when trying to explain to non NLP'ers what's going on.

Did you notice Derren anchoring the initial state when the guy just has to have something, and then constantly reinforce the anchor as he pumped up the state? Neat.

Hi Dan,
I know this is probably too late for your meeting with your friend, but you could,
if he is willing, work with suggestion to keep him alert whilst driving, but install
a suggestion for it to happen everytime he drives, and elicit an experience he had
in the past when he was very alert and mentally focused, then link that thought to him
opening his car door, creating an anchor that should kick in everytime he drives.
Make sure you elicit a feel good state in him, and then amplify it and all should be
well.
How are things going since the course? I found myself naturally using the
language patterns, and I helped a friend out with something the other night, that she
wanted me to use NLP with, a client of hers, and she said it seemed very natural the
way I did it, and he'd changed state, to a more resourceful one, very quickly before he
realised what was going on.
Cheers,
John

This is quite an interesting finding, which I know you've spoken about at your recent NLP course. It's something that I am considering doing (not trying!) myself with a couple of friends.
What's most interesting is the fact that your subjects responded when they couldn't have visual contact with you, and they just dropped back into trance. Curious... wonder what's going on in the unconscious mind to make this happen. when I get the chance I'll give it a go and report back on anything that happens.
Cheers
John
